Colors are rich and beautiful, contrast is bright and lovely and black levels are pleasant and satisfying. The animation quality is good. I don't know why, but the original Bambi was never one of my favorites of them, but rather one of my lesser favorites. Younger kids will love it regardless, of course, and, as direct-to-video family fare goes, it's more bearable than most. It turns out to be a hunting ploy, and Bambi is cornered by several fierce-looking dogs. I much prefer this sequel. They won't mind the songs, they won't behoove its fun little romps through the forest, they won't raise an eyebrow at its aimless sequences, or scoff at its many, many missed opportunities. And dynamics and directional effects aren't startling, but they are convincing, enveloping the listener with ease.
Jock Of The Bushveld is a great story and the only animal classic to come out of Africa. He wakes up to what appears be his mother's voice, which calls him into a meadow, but it turns out to be an ambush by Man. They'll cower when unseen hunters fire rifles and when snarling hounds snap at Bambi's heels, and beam when their favorite fawn isn't forced to endure any life-altering hardships as he did once upon a time when he lost his mother and braved a raging forest fire. But Ronno, a bully with budding antlers, targets the young prince as his enemy. He has no experience caring for a fawn, but as wise friend Owl suggests, who better to raise the young prince than the Great Prince himself? Worse, Bambi desperately tries to connect with his father, only to eventually do just that in a series of scenes that completely, completely neglect and impair the long-established relationship between Bambi and the Great Prince in the latter half of the original film. Most parents have distinct memories of watching as a child and will be happy to know that Bambi and his father have come a long way in accepting their new life together. He and Thumper are Bambi's friends who help him be brave to impress his father.
She is Bambi's romantic interest and is part of a between Bambi and his future rival, Ronno. At one point he hears his mother calling to him. Together, they can look forward to a bright future. Bambi knows his mother is gone. Bambi realizes the Great Prince had planned on sending him away and snaps at his father, while the Great Prince concludes that he is not meant to raise Bambi. Purists may scoff that Bambi is grown and has a family of his own at the end of the original and that this one should've picked up there, but I like that it picked up right after his mom died.
He grieves for his mother, but only intermittently and, even then, in the confines of daydreams and questions posed to dear old dad; the tremors of her death are felt, but just barely. It's a fling I hope the studio isn't anxious to indulge in again. After a sobering opening, she's quickly forgotten and only resurrected when the writers need to twist a few heart-screws. Release While the film was a direct-to-video release in many countries, including the , , , , and , it was a theatrical release in the , , , , , , , and some other countries. The rest of the film mainly focuses on Bambi's efforts to earn his father's love for him. Here, the Great Prince isn't an enigma or a creature of few words or deafening silence, he's just a flawed buck doing the best he can to influence a son he's ill-equipped to raise.
